mental health issues in the UK

Feb 12, 2021

It may seem like a high figure but statistics show that 1 in 4 people in the UK experience mental health issues at some point in the year [1].

While 1 in 4 people have mental health issues, 1 in 6 people report experiencing a mental health issue each week [2]. What does this mean in the UK? There are around 20 million in the UK who will experience difficulties with a common mental illness.

Think about your family, how many people are there in it? Has anyone in your family talked openly about having difficulties with their mental health? It is highly likely that at least one member of your family has had mental health issues at least once in the past year.

How about your friendship group? Think of those closest to you. You may talk everyday, maybe in person, by phone or on social media. At least one of your friends may be suffering with the symptoms of a common mental health issue .

Not everyone shares their struggles with mental health illnesses. Many may never share their difficulties with family, friends, or even medical professionals. They may need help but are afraid to ask or perhaps do not even know how to ask.

Mental Health Midlands are here to help with mental health first aid training. This training can be valuable in your personal and professional life. Knowing the signs of mental illnesses and how to offer support can mean a huge difference to the people in your life who may be experiencing difficulties with common mental illnesses. We are part of the Mental Health First Aid Group.

If you have had struggles there are many places you can go for support or if you have concerns about someone you know. The NHS has a good list of contacts you can lookup at a time of need.
